Using the article and your own experiences, write a paragraph defining nonprofits. What are 4 characteristics of nonprofit organizations? ALSO: Write one question that emerged for you in reading this article.
A nonprofit means that an organization is government funded and does not make a profit off of anything they do. Different types of nonprofit organizations serve communities in a variety of ways. Some examples of nonprofit organizations in the state of Rhode Island are Sojourner House, Save the Bay and Providence After School Alliance, these are just a few that I have worked closely with. Many nonprofits are strictly volunteer only because the organization can only afford to pay it;s staff but relies on volunteers. An organizations volunteers volunteer because they care and want to give back to their community. This weeks reading says that "nonprofits tend to attract people with certain shared values," and I believe that to be very true. As a member of a nonprofit we all have shared beliefs of the organization although we make meaning of the values and principles differently, we all hold that common bond that aligns with the mission and the vision of the organization.
Question: With the various types of nonprofit organizations, can their characteristics overlap?
Question: With the various types of nonprofit organizations, can their characteristics overlap?
Hey Casey! To try and answer your question I definitely think characteristics of nonprofits can overlap. While they can be categorized differently often organizations mission, vision or even the group they have chosen to focus on can be similar. Hope this helps :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for your post Casey. One quick clarification: nonprofits can be funded in a bunch of different ways. Whereas the government (public sector) is funded almost exclusively through tax dollars, nonprofits can be funded through government grants, grants from foundations (other nonprofits), individual or corporate donations, and through their own fees for service. You may want to check in with folks from last class because we talked about this in depth. Or feel free to reach out to connect with me.
