BLM

“Slavery never ended it just evolved.”

My internship is at St. Paul School after school program and if a young person were to ask me about the Black Lives Matter movement I would do my best to explain it. I am a white woman who supports BLM but I feel as though my white guilt holds be back from talking about the movement. Many of the youth in my after school program are of a different race or background other than white and I am surprised that this has not come up yet. I would tell the young person that it is a group of people who all want the same thing and they want to put an end to racism. After having the initial conversation I would then do some research about teaching BLM to youth and possibly show pictures of the movement and posters and create a safe space for discussion and for the youth to ask questions. I know there are some questions that I can not answer when it comes to the Black Lives Matter movement but I would do anything in my power to get the answers for my youth.

The video that discusses 4 Black Lives Matter myth's debunked was very informative and git me thinking. Many of my family members have said some of these myths and this video gave me some tools to have these conversations surrounding these myths. I loved how confident she was when speaking about BLM and I could feel her passion for the movement. I also liked how she provided facts like "in 2015 40% of black men in the nation were killed by police", that is a chilling number.
